The purpose of an army 2008-06-12 Despite promises by our government prior to the surrender of Gaza to our enemies, Arab rockets pummeling the western Negev have been met with no serious Israeli response. And now many speak out against an operation in Gaza claiming that such an action would cost the lives of our soldiers. While IDF casualties are certainly possible in such a battle (as they would be in any battle), a lack of military action would ultimately cost more lives. Hamas is updating its arsenal daily and plans to use those weapons against our civilian population. While sending the IDF into Gaza may cost the lives of soldiers, our situation will be much worse if we delay. And how ridiculous is the argument that we cannot send our military into battle to defend endangered citizens because such action could cost the lives of soldiers? What would the people putting forward these arguments tell us the purpose of an army is? Operation Defensive Shield in Judea and Samaria put a stop to virtually all terror stemming from those areas. It is true that Jewish soldiers lost their lives in that operation but ultimately the country became a great deal safer as a result. A similar operation in the Gaza strip today would not only prevent Jews from being killed but also Arabs as an incursion today can prevent furious carpet bombing tomorrow. |
