Remembering Tabba
2007-10-15

In logical terms, the Jewish nation should have no reason to worry. The fact that Abu Mazen is so politically weak forces him to take an even harder position than in negotiations than this already hard line figure would normally take. If the Middle East Conference in Annapolis takes place at all, Abu Mazen will come with a Hamas attitude which is completely unacceptable to nearly everyone in Israel.

After Camp David, then Prime Minister Ehud Barak boasted that he was successful in unmasking Arafat for the monster that he truly is. But we must remember that at Camp David, Barak made unprecedented concessions, including the division of Jerusalem. What many people forget is that after Camp David but only a week before the elections that removed Barak from power, there was another meeting in Taba, where Barak (along with Shlomo Ben-Ami) went even further than the concessions offered at Camp David. The Arabs can potentially demand that the negotiations at Annapolis begin with what was offered at Taba. This no Israeli, not even Barak (when not under the pressure of being in his last week of power), could agree to.

United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has been doing the Jewish people a great service until now by demanding that Israel and the PA come up with a written agreement before the conference. Any agreement that requires a written document in advance will certainly lead to no agreement at all. Alas it seems that Rice has figured this out and is now back peddling in order to make it easier for Israel to relinquish parts of our homeland west of the Jordan River.
