Israeli Muslim schools

Once again, Arab institutions in Israel are demanding that the Israeli-Arab education system will be autonomous, like the National Religious system, and provide its own content. But the National Religious system is Zionist and the Arabs are not a religious minority.

If Muslims were to demand their own education system not on national but on religious grounds, this would be more legitimate. And Sheikh Abdul Hadi Palazzi of Italy would of course be the best Muslim leader to control and direct such a school system. Because rather than educate the Arab youth towards violence, he would teach them that their holy city is Mecca and that the city of Jerusalem (which only became important to Islam for political anti-Zionist reasons AND WAS NOT MENTIONED EVEN ONCE IN THE KORAAN) is the holy city of the Jews.

Whats in a handshake?

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert met Syrian President Bashar Assad in Paris today. And to the delight of the Israeli media, Assad considered to shake Olmert’s hand. It did not happen. For those who intend to start mourning we must remind them that the handshake is not important and only a self- deprecating people so starved for approval from foreign nations can view a mere handshake as a diplomatic achievement.

Arch terrorist Yasser Arafat shook the hands of many Israeli leaders (and even hugged Ehud Barak at Camp David). And with the very same hand, Arafat signed the orders to commit countless acts of terror throughout the country.

It is unbelievable to those Israelis with national pride that many of our compatriots would even want our premier to shake Assad’s hand. If one day there will be an agreement of genuine peace in exchange for peace with Syria that stipulates Israel keeping the Golan Heights, perhaps then we would force ourselves to shake Assad’s hand but only after this hand signs away any Syrian claims to our beloved Golan.

In memory of Senator Jesse Helms/Michael Kleiner

It was appropriate that American Senator Jessie Helms die on the 4th of July. Senator Helms was a man who spent his entire life fighting for the good of his beloved country and I would imagine that if he had to choose a day on which to depart this world it would have been the birthday of American independence.

Jesse Helms was perhaps the last old fashioned patriot in the United States Senate. For him, America was an ideal and a dream that symbolized democracy, justice and liberty as the values that form the human spirit and represent all that is good in our world.

When I met Jesse Helms in 1984, he was regarded as an enemy of my country. He had strongly criticized the State of Israel for bombardments in Lebanon and viewed most Jews in America as hypocrites who on the one hand support and want to strengthen Israel with the most up-to-date weapons yet on the other hand oppose the military budgets necessary for America to provide such weaponry. Helms was a strong opponent of US foreign aid, believing it immoral to force American workers to give their hard earned tax dollars to a foreign country. He therefore criticized the Israel lobby in Washington as the locomotive that keeps foreign aid alive. He also opposed efforts by the United States Senate (under the leadership of New York Senator Daniel Moynihan) to force then President Ronald Reagan to relocate the United States embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

When I came, as a young member of Israel’s parliament, to see Senator Jesse Helms in 1984, Jewish leaders I had met in New York had regarded me as if I were going to meet a Ukrainian anti-Semite in the beginning of the 20th century. After a week of several meetings with Senator Helms and his colleagues, however, Helms issued a letter to President Reagan, urging him to preempt the unlawful congressional legislation and move the US embassy to Jerusalem (his main opposition to the Moynihan’s efforts on this matter were what he saw as the legislative branch of government usurping powers rightfully belonging to the executive branch). He also recommended that President Reagan not work towards the creation of a “Palestinian state in the heart of the holy land.” If this was not enough, Helms also declared that Israel should annex Judea and Samaria.

The New York Times then described all of this as a turnabout in Helms’s positions vis-à-vis the Jewish state. Since our meeting, he and his conservative colleagues have worked closely with the Americans for a Safe Israel (AFSI) and he had became recognized as Israel’s best friend in the senate. It must also be noted that the very Jesse Helms who opposed foreign aid to Israel also advocated the position that Israel is entitled to receive much more assistance than the foreign aid in terms of defense because the existence of Israel and its strong military presence in the Middle East saves America billions of dollars each year (he proved this by showing the annual expenses of defending Europe and Japan).

In his last years, Helms ceased to be politically active but stayed in touch with Herb Zweibon and Bobby Jacobs, the men who had facilitated our meeting in 1984. And Senator Helms remained a true friend to Israel and the Jewish people until his death. I only hope that Israel will know how to give him the tribute he deserves. On a personal note, Senator Helms once honored me by introducing me to all of his colleagues on the Senate floor and putting into the congressional records the story of my family and my visit to the United States, drawing a parallel between my parents being Holocaust survivors and our joint efforts to keep the State of Israel strong and safe. It takes a great man with endless courage and solid self-confidence to drastically change his opinion when faced with new arguments and facts. Jesse Helms was such a man.

How to best save Shalit/Yehuda Hakohen Weisbrod

The government of Israel has once again made our nation appear weak before the entire world. Trading arch-terrorist Samir Kuntar to Hezbollah in exchange for what most believe will be the bodies of Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev only serves to humiliate the Jewish people and could possibly place Gilad Shalit in grave danger. If Hamas sees that Israel is willing to exchange Arab prisoners with blood on their hands even for the corpses of Israeli soldiers, the terrorists will have absolutely no reason to keep Shalit alive.

While we hope and pray that Goldwasser and Regev are unharmed, most evidence indicates that they are indeed dead. Our focus right now must be on saving Shalit. And the best way to ensure Shalit’s safe return to his family is to kill Kuntar and deliver his corpse to Hezbollah in exchange for the bodies of our soldiers. Israel must make it clear that our policy is to trade only corpses for corpses. This will force Hezbollah to pay a price for the lives of our boys. They would undoubtedly understand that had they not kidnapped our soldiers, Kuntar would at least be alive in an Israeli prison. And they would know that had they taken care to keep Goldwasser and Regev alive, they might have had a chance to free Kuntar.

This would also send a message to Hamas that if they spare Shalit’s life and deliver him unharmed, they could potentially free terrorists from our jails (while killing Shalit will only lead to Israel killing the jailed terrorists they most desire free). But Prime Minister Olmert does not appear ready to act in this fashion. Instead he is ready to trade a live Kuntar for what will most likely be two dead Israeli soldiers. And this will signal to Hamas that they have absolutely no incentive for keeping Shalit alive.

Mediterranean maneuvers

It has been reported by the foreign press that the State of Israel has been conducting air force maneuvers over the Mediterranean in preparation for a possible attack against Iran. Media outlets have accusingly asked why we did not hide these maneuvers as oppose to conducting them so publicly and as a result increasing tension in the region. But these accusers must understand that there really is nowhere Israel could have conducting this training in secret.

Although an Israeli spokesperson unofficially validated these claims, we do not really know if the maneuvers were real or even a threat against Iran. It could have also been done to pressure European nations so that they might stand strong against Iran. It must be clear that regarding the Iranian issue, Israel cannot afford to overlook any option.

Our government has an obligation to stop Iran at any cost and if conventional warfare will not suffice we must use every means at our disposal. And we must ensure that Israel strikes first because even our second strike capabilities cannot be relied upon as a deterrent with Iran’s political leadership. They are ready to sacrifice 80% of their citizens (and all of the Arabs of Judea and Samaria whose cause they so boldly champion) for their holy goal of destroying the Jewish state.

Giving credit where it is due

We appear to be witnessing the last days of the Olmert government. The question that remains for us, however, is whether it will be replaced by the same coalition led by Livni or Mofaz (with help from Likud members who have joined Kadima to thwart Livni) or by a new government following national elections. Although most members of Knesset oppose new elections (as many are not confident of keeping their seats), they may still reluctantly vote in such a direction.

What is clear to us is that Olmert is on his way out. And most Israelis will be relieved to see him gone from the office of prime minister.

But we must give credit where credit is due and acknowledge two areas where this government showed itself to be good for the country.

For starters, this was the best government Israel has ever had from the perspective of defending democracy against the attempts of the Supreme Court to usurp legislative power from the Knesset and run the country as an oligarchic dictatorship. Additionally, this government courageously stood up against Shas and its demands for excessive child allowances. Although appeasing Shas would have made Olmert’s life easier with the hareidi parties, it would have encouraged a larger birthrate of a population that opposes the existence of Israel as a Jewish state. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Finance Minister Ronnie Bar-On valiantly stood their ground, even when faced with pressure and the opportunity to potentially save their coalition.

A ceasefire without Shalit

The fact that Israel is making a ceasefire agreement with Hamas in the Gaza Strip without obtaining freedom for captured soldier Gilad Shalit shows great weakness and will justifiably be seen by the international community as a severe blow to the State of Israel.

Hamas needs a ceasefire in order to gather more arms and reorganize their forces. When the fighting continues (and everyone knows it will continue), they will be in a position to more effectively fight against Israel’s civilian population.

When one looks at the behavior of our current government, it is difficult to believe that this is the same country that stunned the world with our daring rescue of captured Jews at Entebbe in 1976. Gilad Shalit is not in Uganda but most likely located in the Gaza Strip only a few minutes from Sderot. The fact that our army seems incapable of rescuing him under current circumstances speaks volumes about the need for a permanent Israeli civilian and military presence in Gaza (this afterall is what originally prompted Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres to build Jewish communities in the Gaza Strip).

But because our government already expelled all Jews from Gaza and withdrew the IDF from the territory, our options for freeing Shalit are very limited. At the very least, any ceasefire agreement with Hamas should be based on the terror group first releasing Shalit. Otherwise, it should be no surprise to us when the world accepts Hamas’s declarations of victory as legitimate.

The silver lining of the ceasefire

The State of Israel’s current ceasefire agreement with Hamas might be a blessing in disguise because the primary political victim of such an agreement is Abu Mazan and his “moderate” Fatah party. While it is true that this agreement is essentially a de-facto recognition of Hamas and that the ceasefire will allow the terror group to re-arm for the next round of violence, Fatah is actually the greater danger to Israel (as they possess both international and local legitimacy while at the same time working to destroy Israel no less than Hamas).

Herut opposes this agreement on many grounds and it pains us to see how weak Israel has become. But we also see the silver lining of Abu Mazan’s defeat and his becoming irrelevant may save Israel in the long run.

Syrian saber rattling

Damascus has been rattling their sabers in recent weeks. The bold statement made by Syria’s deputy foreign minister that there are ways other than peace for retaking the Golan Heights should cause us to reevaluate where our government is leading us.

For decades following their crushing defeats at Jewish hands, Syria would not even hint at attacking the State of Israel. They feared us. And with good reason. The fact that they once again feel confident to make military threats is proof that Israel has lost our once formidable deterrence factor.

Our joke of a prime minister constantly speaking about concessions encourages our enemies to believe that they can succeed at destroying us. They view us as weak. And with good reason. By offering (for internal political reasons) to relinquish the Golan Heights to Syria, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has brought the issue of the Golan to the attention of the Syrian people. Now the Syrian government has no choice but to push for an Israeli withdrawal either through “peace” negotiations or through war.

We must make clear to the world that the Golan Heights is an inseparable part of the State of Israel and must remain under Jewish control for all time. Only when we speak in a bold language about the justice of our rights to live securely in full borders (while at the same time being ready to physically decimate any nation attempting to harm us) can we hope to achieve peace as a permanent nation in the Middle East.

The power of Mofaz's tongue

After declaring that Israel has no choice but to attack Iran, Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz caused oil prices to skyrocket and even managed to hurt the New York stock exchange.

While it is easy to join in on the global degradation of Mofaz and how as Transportation Minister he is easing traffic by increasing the price of oil (thus deterring Israeli motorists from driving).

Still, those who believe that a strong international attitude can stop Iran should thank and rather than attack Mofaz for putting out the possibility that Israel will become frightened enough to act alone. From this perspective, Mofaz’s declaration is not so damaging.

The real question is whether or not Israel has the ability to hit all of Iran’s nuclear facilities or if we need to rely on the US air force to effectively do this.

In any case, Mofaz represents the Israeli consensus that we cannot stand a nuclear Iran and must be prepared to stop it at any price.
